On Saturday March 13, 2010, over 100 kids, ages 8-18, from Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego gathered to participate in the first semi-annual Sikh Basketball Camp. The camp was held at Pacoima Middle School, hosted by Khalsa Care Foundation, at no cost to participants and open to all. The camp was organized by Singh Sensations; a local Sikh basketball team that competes in the City of Burbank’s Adult Basketball league. The “coaches” were all volunteers either from Singh Sensations basketball team or sangat from the greater Los Angeles area. In keeping with the Sikh traditions, free subway lunch was provided to all the participants.
The aim of the camp was to teach kids the fundamentals of playing basketball but more importantly to instill concepts like healthy living, keeping the Sikh-identity on and off the basketball courts, sportsmanship and teamwork. These concepts are of great importance for the Sikh community.
